Oct 1st 2009 11:28 am Checklist for Success
As a business guy, a lot of my time is spent on working with people who want to improve various parts of their businesses. These vary from small things such as company descriptions all the way to big things such as getting sales & making profit. There are some essential principles that your business should have in order to stand out & be known, and they are listed below.
1. Discipline
This is usually an area where most people are not interested in dealing with, but it is very important. Discipline basically means to have a sharp focus on what you want, basically what your objective is. Your objective can be your company’s profits, growth, or relationships with customers. Most successful businesses will have a continual process where they consistently monitor what they are doing and can identify their problems and areas where they need to improve.
2. A Clear Purpose
At some point in time, almost every company will lose sight of their customer’s needs and will get too obsessed with profits. When you have a clear purpose in mind, it is much easier to have a different perspective on how customers view your company, and it is much easier to change the way your business is built without straying away from what was originally meant to do. A clear purpose also allows your employees to be connected with their hearts, and act in a purposeful manner, instead of acting with their minds which can be corrupted or influenced by many different things.
3. Set Goals That Require Action
Don’t set goals that are silly and unachievable. You need to be motivated to work towards a goal. When you continuously draw a picture in your head of what you want to achieve, you will achieve it. You need to have a goal that is actually compelling. A vague goal such as “make more profits” or “sell more” or “survive” is useless. They will get you nowhere. You have to set goals that challenge you but are realistic and can be achieve. They need to initiate a process of innovation, effort, and excitement.
4. Leadership
Not only is the job of the leader important to the company’s survival, but it is required for successful employees. You are a leader, and therefore as a leader your duty is to encourage people, provide them with direction / instructions, and inspire them to work hard and put in their maximum effort. You must ensure that your employees are happy while they work. The most successful businesses have leaders that are emotionally stable, and can make decisions according to what is right for the company, not what is right in terms of “being nice”.
5. Preparation For Surprises In The Future
If you want your business to be successful, you must take into consideration the surprises that can occur in the near or distant future. You need to spend time thinking about different scenarios of “what if’s”, and you must be prepared to deal with them accordingly. Many businesses only think about the present, and not the future. They do not concern themselves with what will happen next year or six months later. This will force you to stick to products and not grow as a company and you won’t even realize it because you’ll be making profits. Even though you’re making profits, they will be minimal. It is a little hard to explain, but basically when people are gaining money at a quick rate for any period of time, they concern themselves with keeping that going. That is a very good thing to do, but not if you only think about what you can do right NOW to keep it going. You should think about what you need to do in the future to continue it, and what you will do if something happens and you cannot continue it.
I hope you have attained some knowledge about what a successful business requires. I am sure you will apply the above tips to your company or business, and I hope you achieve success. Remember, it’s about quality, not quantity. The more effort and time you put in, the more successful you will be.
